Ethereal Sound & Faith: Inside Kyei Mensah’s Spirit-Lifting Live Experience

The Essentials

Hello, welcome to "Those who Gather". Can you tell us your name and what you host on Gaderin?
My name is Kyei Mensah, a Christian singer, songwriter, and guitarist. I’m known as the “Christian RnB guy.” I’m known for curating beautiful experiences through music and artistry, whether it’s through my covers or my own music.

How did the idea for this concert begin? What inspired you to create it?
The idea of the concert was birthed in 2023 after I released my debut EP titled Sound & Faith. We had a release party/listening session, and from that, I decided with my team to organize a live concert. It wasn’t an easy task, but I’m glad we decided to go ahead with it.

What makes this concert different from any other live music event?
This concert isn’t like your typical Christian concert. People have a certain perception about Christian concerts, and we don’t actually go the normal way. It’s a concert where people can actually come and enjoy music and artistry while being spiritually fed by the Holy Spirit. My favourite verse happens to be Psalm 33:3, which speaks about being skillful in music, and that’s another thing this concert has to offer.

The Build-Up

Take us behind the scenes: what goes into preparing for this one-night-only concert?
I won’t lie, it’s a very difficult and tiring thing. From booking venues to raising funds to rent instruments and decor, it’s not easy at all, but we make it work. With the aspect of music, I usually have my song list ready by February, and my band starts to work on the music by March so we don’t have to hasten the process. Everything has to be on point. When one thing goes bad, we have contingencies in place to make everything go smoothly.

Do you have any personal rituals before stepping on stage?
A lot of prayers and fasting to get myself spiritually right, ready, and sensitive to receive from the Holy Spirit. Physically, it’s just a lot of vocal exercises, I skip, drink some water, and just hope for an amazing show with my team.

What music sets the mood for you leading up to the performance?
I usually spend the time in silence no music. Just me and my thoughts.

The Moment

Describe the energy on the night from your perspective on stage.
The energy is really different. I think it’s because we touch on a lot of genres. We start off the show with RnB, then move into an acoustic set, CCM follows up, and then we end the night with some highlife music and even jama sometimes. I’m really interested in seeing how this year’s own pans out since, for the first time, it’ll just be me on stage.

What’s a standout moment from past concerts that still gives you chills?
I believe it was when I sang the RnB version of “Defe Defe” by Team Eternity. I think the audience didn’t expect that at all, and it was a beautiful moment. That’s when I knew it was a special moment.

How do you want people to feel when they leave the experience?
I want people to feel and know that music doesn’t have to be rigid or too specific. Again, people have a myopic view on Gospel music in Ghana. Coming to The Sound & Faith Concert will make you realize music can be fun and be a blessing at the same time.

Off Stage

When you're not preparing for the big night, what’s your idea of a perfect Saturday in Accra?
Staying at home and eating my mom’s cooking. Spending time with my brothers and probably being on the phone with my crush (loool).

What’s a hidden gem in Accra that you think more people should know about?
There’s a restaurant I’m almost always at or ordering food from. It’s called Blue Cheese. My go-to order is the pork noodles with a side of coleslaw. Don’t judge, it’s amazing (lool). Tell them Kyei Mensah mentioned the place to you.

What's one thing fans might be surprised to learn about you?
I almost had a whole career as an RnB artist. I could have been the next Chris Brown (lool).

Legacy & Vision

What does “gathering differently” mean to you in the context of live music and performance?
To me, this means a gathering of different people from different parts of the world coming together to enjoy one thing: good Christian music.

In one sentence, why should someone be in the room when your concert happens?
“You’re gonna be a part of history. When people talk about the music that came from the concert, you can proudly say you were there too.”

If you had to describe your concert in one word, what would it be?
